Mips® - safety system

Mips® stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. The system is integrated into the helmet as a low-friction intermediate layer and is designed to help reduce rotational forces that can strain the brain in the event of angled impacts.

What is Mips®?

KED uses Mips® in selected helmets where it sensibly complements the protection concept. No helmet can completely rule out injuries. Mips® replaces neither a correct fit nor careful riding behavior, but complements both with an additional layer of protection.

    When cycling, crashes are rarely perfectly straight. The helmet often hits the ground at an angle. In those moments, rotational forces can occur that put more strain on the brain than a straight impact.

    Mips® addresses exactly that. The low-friction layer inside the helmet is designed to allow a small, controlled relative movement between head and helmet during an angled impact, so that part of these rotational forces can be redirected before they reach the head.

    The low-friction layer allows micro-movements of around 10 to 15 millimeters. The system typically adds only 20 to 45 grams to the helmet. In everyday use, Mips® works invisibly in the background and does not change the fit or how the helmet feels.

    Why this matters at KED

    KED develops helmets for very different riding profiles, from city traffic to the trail. Angled impacts are not a side issue here, but the most common crash pattern in real-world riding. Mips® is used where it meaningfully addresses this risk profile.

What Mips® does not replace

BOA®, FIDLOCK® and QUICKSAFE® provide fit, adjustment and ease of use. The EPS inner shell absorbs impact energy. Mips® adds a movement layer for obliquely acting forces to these building blocks. Each layer has its task, none replaces the other.

A helmet must fit properly first. Only then can the overall concept work.

Does Mips® replace a good fit?

No. Mips® complements the helmet, but replaces neither a correct fit nor proper adjustment.

Which KED helmets have Mips®?

Pector ME-1, Reach DT-1, Reach DT-1 Bestzeit, Reach AR-1, Mitro UE-1, Mitro UE Collection 25/26, POP and POP II.

Does Mips® make the helmet heavier?

Only minimally. Depending on the model, it adds around 20 to 45 grams, with no noticeable effect on wearing comfort.

Ersetzt Mips® einen guten Helm?

Nein. Kein Helm kann Verletzungen vollständig ausschließen. Mips® ersetzt weder eine korrekte Passform noch umsichtiges Fahrverhalten, sondern ergänzt beides um eine zusätzliche Schutzebene.
