Discover sport helmets
The bicycle helmets from KED® not only shape the urban lifestyle, but also offer athletes the sought-after combination of high wearing comfort and excellent protective performance. The development of KED® brand helmets for cycling is particularly important to us because athletes do not place high demands on their equipment, they are also great brand ambassadors.

Sebastian Trimborn, KED® Rayzon-Fan and team driver at The KED Stevens cycling team from the Berlin TSC is one of them.

In keeping with the time of year, we wanted to know from Sebastian what a seasonal athlete like him actually does in the colder months and how he trains for the coming season in autumn and winter. You can read his answers to our questions below. Maybe among his answers you will also find some inspiration for you cycling enthusiasts and your own training? But just read for yourself:

Sebastian, tell me… how does training in the fall differ from the rest of the year, what do you focus on in the fall?

"After the season is before the season. For me, after a two-week offseason in the fall, the focus is on getting back into everyday training routine and laying the foundation for the new season."

What can be done outside now? Natur train well, what training variants do you practice in the fall?

"During the season I ride almost exclusively on my racing bike. In the fall I also like to get out my mountain bike or cross bike and try my luck at one or two cross races every now and then. My focus is on having fun and enjoying cycling."

What makes fall so beautiful or special for cycling?

"In autumn there is enough time to concentrate on cycling itself. You can cycle free of the thought of performance and without thinking about the next races Natur and enjoy your time on the bike.”

What training tips are you following or would you like to give others for the fall?

"The foundation for the coming season is laid in autumn and winter. That definitely doesn't mean just riding small gears in a relaxed and calm manner. The foundation is important, but should be loosened up with one or two intensive sessions. I follow a polarized approach and train in consultation and according to the plan of my trainer Steffi Steinberg, according to the motto "loose is relaxed and fast is fast." Almost 80% of my training time is casual and 20% of the weekly training time is intensive.”

What role does the weather play in training and how can you prevent it?

"There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. In my opinion, there is definitely something to that. Thanks to my time on the mountain bike and some extreme experiences in the ultra-endurance range, the weather is not an excuse for me not to train. If it does get too extreme, a roller trainer can help."

What should you avoid when cycling in autumn and winter?

"It's always better to start training dressed a little too thickly than too thinly and make sure you have enough food, even in cooler conditions. When it's hot outside, we automatically drink. In the fall, or when it's a little cooler anyway, you shouldn't forget to drink."

What restrictions do you have when cycling in autumn?

“The shorter days obviously limit the training time somewhat, but they can be stretched out with good light and bright clothing, so that there is no obstacle to a training trip even in the evening at dusk or early in the morning.”

Which countries or routes are particularly popular with cyclists in autumn and winter?

“I prefer training in the southern regions in autumn and have been regularly traveling to Mallorca over the winter months in recent years and can definitely recommend the Balearic island as a training region.”

How do you stay motivated in the fall?

"Goals that have been set for the coming season keep motivation high. Whether it's racing goals, a successful bike packing tour or an upcoming cycling holiday in the summer, it doesn't really matter. If you know what you're training for in the fall and winter, then it's easier to motivate yourself even on days when it's a little more difficult to get on the bike. Often it helps to just get started, put on your clothes and start riding. Then the motivation comes all by itself."

Thanks Sebastian for your tips!

Frequently asked questions about the topic

How does cycling training change in autumn and winter?

After the season, the focus is usually on rebuilding the base. Variety with a mountain bike, cyclocross bike or indoor trainer helps keep endurance and riding fun through the cold season.

What does Sebastian Trimborn mean by a polarised training approach?

In the article he describes a split with mostly easy sessions and a smaller share of intense work. What matters is keeping recovery and speed sessions clearly separate.

Why does drinking matter in winter training?

In the cold, the sense of thirst is often weaker even though the body keeps losing fluid. So you should drink regularly in autumn and winter too, and take enough food with you.

When is an indoor trainer a good alternative?

In ice, storms, very poor visibility or other unsafe conditions, an indoor trainer allows a controlled session. It does not fully replace bike handling and being out in nature, though.

How do you stay motivated in the cold season?

A concrete goal for the coming season, fixed training times and varied routes all help. Often it is enough to get dressed and set off, the motivation then arrives in the first few kilometres.
